Peace for Trayvon! and Equal Justice for All

It would be safe to say the biggest attention grabber in the headlines over the last month was regarding George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin.

I could not have written a more timely article last month, pointing out the different wedges that we are going to see driven between us before the election.
This past month it was Trayvon Martin, a 17 year old kid from Florida who lost his life. On the few FACTS that we know still to this day, Trayvon Martin died either by a tragic misunderstanding or worse. We still just don't know...

The political activists jumped on the story though, with Occupy Wall St taking to the streets of New York again, sporting hoodies in support of Trayvon. This article from the left perspective of Salon.com, finishes the story with: "Many young, black marchers donned hoodies and held signs reading, “Am I next?”".

Trayvon should not have died that day, but George Zimmerman had the full force of the left and the media after him since the story went national, with a public conviction spear headed by Al Sharpton.
With little knowledge of the facts, the media all but convicted Zimmerman of a racist hate crime, while the police on the ground didn't even arrest him for over a month.

NBC News actually doctored a 911 call to make it sound as if Zimmerman was overly focused on the boy's race. Watch this video, but especially at 2:25 into the clip:

From the child's parents perspective, I completely understand why they wanted their day in court to find out why the man who shot their son was not charged... But the media, and all the -first to the internet without a thought- "stars" decided early that they would join the mob and publicly prosecute someone for murder.

Spike Lee, a talented movie director and famous Knick fan, tweeted the home address of Zimmerman...
He saw the picture above that we all saw, one of Trayvon at 10, not 17, and Zimmerman wearing what appeared to be an orange jump suit ( an interesting choice for both)...

He saw a far left black congressman wearing a hoodie on the house floor...
and Occupy Wall St, a now fully organized leftist movement (getting arrested in a neighborhood near you), out marching in the streets.
Spike Lee hears all this, along with the cash bounty for anyone who kills Zimmerman by the New Black Panther group... and this coward abuses his popularity to inspire more violence.

Spike was not alone, although I found that tweet to be enraging.

Of course... of all the murders that happen in this country,
President Obama had to weigh in on this one by saying "if he had a son, he would look like Trayvon".
All this statement does is point out the racial component, without any words of wisdom that will temper the mob... thanks Mr. President!

The left tried to exploit his death in order to gain national support for new gun regulations. It failed, but it will be a helpful wedge in future debates.
They also pulled the race card, because people on the left only see color. They can't help themselves. If it were a white hooded out punk with gold teeth, shouting N this and N that, I would not be writing this article because you never would have heard about it.
Maybe eventually we find out Zimmerman is racist, and he only worked with inner city black youths as a cover all this time...

Do we have racial problems in this country? Yes we do. Black Americans who descended from slavery have a perspective that I myself can't fully grasp. While I cherish my heritage and customs, how my grandparents came to this country for more opportunity, perspective becomes reality in this instance.

As a twenty something, its even harder to believe that only 50 years ago there were parts of this country where people with darker colored skin were legally treated dishonorably.

Slavery and discrimination conflict with our goal for equality in our Declaration,  and those who participated in this mindset of superiority over others, were not acting in the spirit of our founding.
Even though some of the framers were hypocritical in this regard, the hypocracy does not erase the ideals they wrote of in building a free society.

Now was Trayvon killed because he was black?
As Salon.com pointed out, should black youths be worried about being next?

I hate to write this about someone who has passed, and as a 17 year old kid, he should have had the time many take for granted to develop and educate ourselves...

But if you read some of his recent twitter feed, “NO_LIMIT_NIGGA”
1 example within months of his death was:
@ (someone) ..."HAHAHA Ho u got USED fa yo loose ass pussy.! Tighten up.! #Literally "

This excuses nothing... but a physical fight did happen that day prior to a gun shot, and one of the two people involved provoked it, while the other escalated it. I believe it is safe to say that.

So as the Salon article pointed out, when black youths are "inspired" by groups (occupy) or "leaders" (Spike and way to many more to name) to get in the streets and hold signs saying "Am I next", lets HOPE they have better leaders next time around.

Let Trayvon rest in peace now, and let's have a real political debate!
