I am a proud New Yorker. My interest in politics began on 9/11/2001, and a decade later I am looking to share what I have learned. 9-11 changed me... it made me realize how little I really knew about the world around me.
I personally felt the vulnerability that many Americans felt at the time, and I knew this vulnerability was from a lack of knowledge as to why it happened. I decided I would educate myself so that I was never caught off guard again.
After the attack there was a moment of unity that I had never experienced to that point. For a time people were more friendly ... we were faced with tragedy and we were united to assure this never happened again.
I developed a great respect for 1st responders. From the courage displayed at Ground Zero, to the soldiers and their families who bear the great burden for us all at war. I am so appreciative of the jobs they do, and I thank them every chance I get... in the future I hope you will too.I personally felt the vulnerability that many Americans felt at the time, and I knew this vulnerability was from a lack of knowledge as to why it happened. Sadly that feeling of unity has unwound over the past decade. Many are back to being asleep as I once was; ignoring the world around them while distracted by"reality" TV & material things. Others have taken sides and grown stagnant in their guarded political posturing.
Discourse in this country has failed and I look to change it.
" Don't talk religion or politics "... so they say.
Its not "P.C." to talk about these subjects in public anymore. The word politics has become the word for anything that has two sides to it, and therefor is "controversial".
Activists among the media and politicians have promoted this politically correct mentality, but did they know the result would be to silence most of the population in the process?
Life is busy... for us all. During free time from work and distractions, we all want to clear our mind from the outside world for some down time. This should not prevent all real conversations though among those we associate with. We have to understand the world that surrounds us, and if you can't speak about it in the work place or during down time, then when?
We have all witnessed this scenario: while out to dinner, someone names a candidate or blames our woes on a political party, etc. and the group think PC reaction squashes the conversation with ooohs and ahhhs... They either fear their own discomfort or lack of knowledge with the subject, or project their intuition to avoid conflict on others.
The problem with this is that our family and friends should be the first one's we rely on to develop our understanding of the world around us.
Facts and feelings should always be considered in the development of our opinions, and who better to listen to then those we can trust? Our opinions should not be concrete, and perspective's are invaluable and need to be heard. We cannot let those who want to walk with their eyes closed blind the rest of us.
The truth is, political conversations can get uncomfortable. Abortion nearly always goes bad between two opposing opinions... thus my first lesson in political discourse: You can't change someones guarded opinions tonight... so don't try! We all need to remind ourselves constantly... don't be afraid to say what you feel and don't be surprised if someone feels otherwise.
A crucial point I hope to emphasise though, is that any and all political conversations must be focused without over generalizing in order to be of any benefit. This is the number one reason why a conversation breaks down into frustrated confusion. If you know facts, then discuss them... but you also can't be afraid of them when they don't support your viewpoint. That is the reason for talking... to stimulate thought and challenge your own beliefs in order to strengthen them.
The conversation between two ideologues who avoid weaknesses in their argument by shifting topics and avoiding conclusions is useless. So let others speak if you can't talk about one thing at a time. These are the conversations that turn people off to any discussion at all...
So what's my goal with this site?
Many people have trouble talking about things that can cause conflict... I'd like to get the conversation started in writing, allowing the focus needed for individual topics not to be derailed by changing the subject. Hopefully I can spark your interest, lend a new perspective, and attract those who had previously steered clear of the political domain.
Although I have been vague in my introduction, I do have strong opinions and will surely share them. I have changed my views on certain things after learning new facts and perspectives, and it is my view that political "science" should be just that; science corrects and integrates previous knowledge with new evidence. Science is never final. So challenge your status quo, and please... challenge mine!
